Section 1: Background

The Croquet Consortium is a not-for-profit foundation established to support the Croquet community-based software development efforts of institutions and individuals. The objective is to provide industry, educational organizations, and individuals with significant opportunities to leverage the distributed expertise and IT investments of the Consortium membership.

Section 2: Croquet Consortium Objectives

  • Share: Maintain a clearinghouse of Croquet open source software artifacts for everyone’s benefit
  • Federate: Coordinate and share requirements, plans, technologies, and events with other organizations, locally and internationally, dedicated to related goals and projects.
  • Educate: Provide education and research in the applied use of Croquet-based open technology architectures, services, and applications; disseminate the results of innovative approaches in this field.
  • Promote: Develop a global community of interest among practitioners and institutions and inform that community of international activities, projects, and opportunities in the area of Croquet-based open technology.
  • Convene: Foster, through its various initiatives, including conferences, projects, and outreach, an atmosphere of trust, goodwill, and mutual respect amongst all participants; facilitate and encourage mutual support for Consortium projects among community members.
  • Mobilize: Mobilize distributed resources for development and support of Consortium projects.
  • Support: Establish working relationships between higher education institutions and vendor partners that are successful in creating new, mutually advantageous models for software support of open source projects.

Section 3: The Croquet Consortium Commitment

The Croquet Consortium will provide:

  • A legal home for the Consortium community and its projects
  • Support and oversight to Consortium projects
  • A focal point on the web and at sponsored events for news and dialogue about Consortium activities and projects.

Section 4: Meetings and Conferences

The Croquet Consortium will hold annual conferences starting in 2007. The consortium may schedule additional events, such as training, workshops, and retreats. Institutional Members can attend all such events at reduced member rates.

Section 5: Croquet Consortium Governance

Please refer to the Consortium Bylaws.

Section 6: Individual Representation in Decision Making

In the spirit of open source collaboration and mutual support, formal membership is not required for Individuals to become involved in the communal development and implementation efforts. The Consortium invites all interested parties to ask questions on our mailing lists, participate in our online discussions, post bug reports, fix software problems, or contribute software source code. Each individual is encouraged to contribute as much as they can afford in terms of time and effort. All individuals gain the benefits of everyone's combined contributions. This is the powerful force multiplier of Open Source communities.

Section 7: Influencing the Direction of the Croquet Consortium

  • Participate: join in Croquet Consortium Conferences and activities.
  • Contribute: Add to the Croquet community development effort by meeting a particular local objective, then sharing your solution and code with the rest of the community.
  • Promote: Act as an advocate for Croquet Consortium within your institution and the larger community
  • Liaison: Communicate with the Croquet Consortium staff on an issue that matters to you
  • Meet Local Needs: Actively direct and shape the community to meet your needs
  • Evaluate: Provide timely feedback to the Croquet Consortium community and staff on any Croquet Consortium-related activities that you have undertaken

Section 8: Why Become a Member?

For those individuals who wish to have a larger say in the strategic direction of the Croquet Consortium, access to advanced Croquet-based training, and a way of showing their personal commitment to community goals, the Croquet Consortium offers "Individual Membership."
